The implementation of sustainable water management in Moabit will provide an opportunity to tackle existing problems, such as flooding during heavy downpours, the formation of heat islands, high levels of soil sealing and the overstretched combined sewer network. It will also increase residents’ quality of life, for example by expanding green spaces. With this in mind, the aim is to introduce sustainable water management systems on private properties, around public buildings and in public spaces (e.g. streets) in order to ease the pressure on the sewer system. The rainwater collected will be used for cooling or other purposes, such as irrigating green spaces.
These challenges are being tackled jointly by the engineering bureau Prof. Sieker mbh, TNO and Deltares from the Netherlands, and the Berliner Wasserbetriebe (BWB).
